The national teacher unions and their state affiliates are heavily involved in promoting abortion on demand with your union dues. Stay informed! There are options for teachers.
National Education Association (NEA) Resolution 1-17 supports government funding of “all methods of family planning.” Among other abortion-related activities, the NEA contributes dues to Planned Parenthood and donated its facilities for a forum featuring late-term abortionist George Tiller. In Oregon, the Oregon Education Association provided more than $1.8 million to Defend Oregon to advocate for reproductive services. The organizations also oppose any legislation limiting abortion on demand for any reason. Why would any pro-life teacher be willing to be aligned with these groups?
The law protects you from funding activities with your union dues that violate your moral or religious beliefs. You may resign from the union to become a religious objector and send 100 percent of your union fees to a non-religious charity. Religious objectors are covered by the terms of the district-union negotiated contract but forfeit the union’s liability policy.
Teachers can join Northwest Professional Educators (NWPE), a non-partisan, non-union association providing twice the liability coverage, legal assistance, and a host of other benefits designed to advance educators as classroom professionals for $16.50 per month. For more information on your rights and how to exercise them, contact NWPE at director@nwpe.org for assistance exercising your rights and a sample religious objector letter.
