Misinformation about abortion and abortion-related laws is running rampant – including the false (and dangerous) idea that some states have banned emergency pregnancy care for women.

In a new “man-on-the-street” style video for the pro-life organization Live Action, New Yorkers offered a variety of incorrect answers – Texas, Arkansas, North Carolina – when asked to name the state that outlaws emergency pregnancy care, including miscarriage management and ectopic pregnancy removal.
Put on the spot, a few people even wrongly guessed that New York had such a law. Ultimately, one person got the right answer – and earned the $100 cash prize.
“I don’t think any state [outlaws emergency pregnancy care],” the New Yorker said. “It’s illegal to get emergency care? What governor would be crazy enough to pass a law like that?”

Since the Dobbs v. Jackson decision overturning Roe v. Wade, many states have passed laws to protect the unborn. In some states, like Texas, the unborn enjoy legal protection from the moment of conception. Other states, like Iowa and North Carolina, have set gestational age limits. But despite the claims of mainstream media outlets, no state outlaws necessary medical care for pregnant women. Recent reports concerning the deaths of pregnant women in Georgia and Texas wrongly suggested that the state’s pro-life laws were to blame – when in reality, pro-life advocates and doctors have noted that medical malpractice appeared to be behind the tragic loss of life.
Oregon Right to Life believes in the sanctity of all human life from the moment of conception to natural death. Abortion ends the life of a genetically distinct, growing human being. We oppose abortion at any point of gestation. In rare cases, a mother may have a life threatening condition in which medical procedures intended to treat the condition of the mother may result in the unintended death of her preborn baby. At the same time, ORTL recognizes that modern medical practice has and will continue to increase the ability to save both the life of the mother and the baby.
