Kamala Harris Misled on Late-Term Abortions, Infanticide During Presidential Debate

Oregon Right to Life

(Oregon Right to Life) — In the Tuesday night debate against former President Donald Trump, Vice President Kamala Harris pushed back against Trump’s accusations that she backs legal third-trimester abortion and infanticide.

Harris’ remarks, together with a “fact-check” against Trump by one of the moderators, led listeners to believe that the examples cited by Trump don’t really occur.

The problem with her arguments?

  • Abortion up until the moment of birth is legal in six states (including Oregon) and Washington, D.C.
    • Practicing abortionists have acknowledged that they’ve performed elective late-term abortions, and late-term abortion facilities openly advertise for abortions post-viability.
    • According to data from the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute, some 10,000 late-term abortions, performed at or after 20 weeks gestation, occur every year.
  • The 2002 federal Born-Alive Protection Act defines infants who survive abortion as “persons” — but the law doesn’t specify standards of care. While infanticide is illegal in every state, the lack of clearly defined protections for these babies makes them vulnerable to medical neglect.
    • Harris’ own running mate Tim Walz supported a measure as Minnesota governor to strip away protections for babies who survive abortions.
    • Many pro-life lawmakers across the country (including in Oregon) back legislation to ensure that infants born during failed abortion attempts receive the same standard of care as a baby born under typical circumstances.

Watch as pro-life apologist Trent Horn takes apart Kamala Harris’ false claims in this short video:

Oregon Right to Life believes in the sanctity of all human life from the moment of conception to natural death. Abortion ends the life of a genetically distinct, growing human being. We oppose abortion at any point of gestation. In rare cases, a mother may have a life threatening condition in which medical procedures intended to treat the condition of the mother may result in the unintended death of her preborn baby. At the same time, ORTL recognizes that modern medical practice has and will continue to increase the ability to save both the life of the mother and the baby.
