Oregon Right to Life (ORTL) strives to protect all life from fertilization until natural death. That means we work to protect the most vulnerable humans, from the unborn baby in the womb to people facing end-of-life decisions. In our state, where physician-assisted suicide is tragically becoming increasingly common, it is especially important to ensure that you and your loved ones are provided for as the end of life approaches.
That’s why we are providing an updated pro-life “advance directive.”
What is an advance directive?
An advance directive is a legally operative document that preserves your medical decisions should you become incapacitated. Through your advance directive, you will appoint a health care representative to make decisions for you in the event that you are no longer able to speak for yourself.
Why do I need one?
Significant legal protections have been removed from Oregon laws in recent years, triggering worries that Oregonians’ end-of-life wishes may not be fully protected in the event of incapacitation. A pro-life advance directive starts with the presumption that your life has inherent value and should be protected.
Who should have an advance directive?
If you are an adult resident of Oregon – even if you’re not elderly or dealing with a serious illness – you should have an advance directive! Think of it as a kind of insurance policy. Accidents or illnesses can occur at any time; it is important to be prepared.
This pro-life advance directive will give you peace of mind knowing that your wishes will be respected by Oregon medical professionals.
