Oregon’s Abortion Rate Rises in Post-Roe Landscape

Oregon’s national reputation as “abortion-friendly” is growing — and now there is data to prove the real-world impact.

In the wake of Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the Supreme Court ruling that overturned Roe v Wade, several conservative states tightened their abortion restrictions. One of those states is neighboring Idaho, which swiftly implemented a ban on all abortions, except those performed in cases of rape, incest and to save the life of the mother.

As a result, during a one-month period this summer, OPB reported that 70 fewer unborn Idahoans were aborted, or a 48 percent decrease. In Oregon, however, the opposite happened: abortion providers performed 150 more than normal, or an 18 percent increase. Washington, meanwhile, also experienced a five percent increase, which translates to 90 more aborted children.

Abortion providers in Oregon say they are seeing more patients from Idaho, as well as from other states with newly-enacted abortion restrictions. OPB reports that Oregon Health & Science University has responded by increasing its telehealth abortion options, upping the number of available clinic spots and expanding abortion-related operating room times to accommodate the demand. Other clinics are focusing on their “reproductive justice” options in rural areas of the Beaver State.

Oregon Right to Life’s executive director warns that the jump in abortion rates may continue — and that pro-lifers need to act.

“With Oregon’s reputation as an abortion haven, we may see a sustained increase,” says Lois Anderson. “As a pro-life community, we need to do all we can to meet mothers in crisis, who may be abortion-vulnerable, and offer real help so that they can choose life.”
