FDA issues warning against internet abortion drugs

The Federal Drug Administration has issued warning letters to two abortion groups that are selling abortion drugs over the internet to American women who have not seen a doctor. After a brief interview with an abortionist over a smartphone app, the abortion pills are mailed. This app-to-mailbox abortion pill scheme is already available in five states including Oregon, Washington, Hawaii, New York, and Maine.

According to the FDA, women are being put at “significant health risks” using the dangerous drugs. The two groups, AidAcess and Rablon, were told to “immediately cease” selling the knock-off drugs over the internet. The drugs come through a pharmacy in India and have not been approved by the FDA. Because U.S. health regulators have no oversight on drugs sold over the internet, there’s a risk of adulteration or improper dosing. If a woman were to have an unknown ectopic pregnancy, the drugs can be fatal.

Rebecca Gomperts, head of AidAccess, called the FDA letter a “bullying strategy” and said she will “not be deterred.” Ironically, the website emphasizes that the drugs are very safe, yet tells women it is “absolutely necessary” to live within an hour of a hospital “in case you lose too much blood.”

A recently updated FDA report revealed that, as of December 31, 2018, there have been 24 deaths associated with the “abortion pill” Mifeprex (the two-drug combination of mifepristone and misoprostol), rather than the earlier figure of 22 deaths. To date, nearly 4,200 “adverse events” have been detailed, including 24 deaths, 97 ectopic pregnancies, 1,042 hospitalizations, 599 blood transfusions, and 412 infections. A 2011 peer-reviewed survey of 22 studies showed abortion increases the likelihood of depression, anxiety, and reckless behavior such as alcoholism, drug use, and suicide.

Dr. Donna Harrison of the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists laments, “These 24 women are otherwise healthy women who are now dead because they took Mifeprex. [Abortionists are] giving you Mifeprex to kill your baby, and sometimes it kills you.” A Planned Parenthood study found that at least one woman is seriously injured from the abortion pill daily.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, in 2014, the abortion pill accounted for 31 percent of all non-hospital abortions and 45 percent of abortions before nine weeks gestation. Millions of unborn babies have died worldwide as a result of this deadly drug combination. [Lifenews.com, 3/12/2019, 4/18/2019, 5/20/2019, 12/21/2012; www.world.wng.org, 3/25/2019]
