In February 2016, pro-life giant and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia passed away unexpectedly. Not long after, President Obama nominated Judge Merrick Garland for the vacant seat. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell went out on a limb to block the confirmation hearings of Garland until after the presidential election. It paid off. In January, newly-elected President Trump took advantage of the opportunity to nominate Judge Neil Gorsuch for the position.
Gorsuch is a highly qualified candidate who is, in many ways, similar to Justice Scalia in his judicial philosophy. He has support from pro-life groups such as National Right to Life and Susan B. Anthony List. Judge Gorsuch has also received praise from less likely sources, including Neal Katyal, who was a high-level legal advisor to former President Obama.
Gorsuch was previously confirmed to the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in 2006 by a unanimous vote of the U.S. Senate. Even current Oregon Senator Ron Wyden voted for Gorsuch.
The Senate will soon vote on whether to confirm Judge Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. This appointment is critical to future Supreme Court decisions on pro-life legislation being advanced through Congress and many state legislatures. We need pro-lifers across Oregon to contact our U.S. Senators and ask them to confirm Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court!
