Abortions Increase as Government Funding Rises PDF Print E-mail

The Planned Parenthood Federation of America’s (PPFA) annual report for fiscal year 2007-2008 shows the nation’s largest abortion business is growing as the organization receives increasing amounts of taxpayer funding. The report also shows that Planned Parenthood is increasingly relying on the dangerous abortion drug RU 486. Also, while the organization has been consolidating some of its centers and affiliates to cut costs, the number of facilities where abortions are performed jumped to 295 from 287 last year. Planned Parenthood operates 97 affiliates and nearly 880 centers throughout the United States.

Although abortion numbers were on the decline nationally, Planned Parenthood’s figures show a 5.3 percent increase (from 289,750 in 2006 to 305,310 in 2007) in the number of abortions their affiliates performed. The 305,310 abortions done in 2007 generated an estimated $130 million for the abortion business.

The total amount of government grants and contracts received by PPFA affiliates from government sources including state, local and federal governments, increased from $337 million in 2006 to $350 million in 2007. These figures have doubled from the 160,000 abortions and $160 million in taxpayer funding recorded in 1997.

Planned Parenthood’s share of the nation’s abortion business has continued to rise. In 1984, it committed just over 5.5 percent of all abortions done in the United States. By 2004, that figure had escalated to nearly 20 percent. Only 4,912 Planned Parenthood customers were referred to adoption agencies, compared with the 305,310 abortions performed.

The annual report reveals that the organization generated more than $1,038,000 billion in fiscal year 2007-2008, an increase of over two percent from the previous reporting period. In 2006-2007, Planned Parenthood’s earnings had risen more than 11 percent. Doug Scott, president of Life Decisions International, explained, “This ‘not-for-profit’ goliath ends every fiscal year with millions of dollars in ‘excess revenue over expenses’ – which is known to regular people as ‘profit.’ This is essentially a savings account. The money is sitting in a bank and drawing interest that will further advance Planned Parenthood’s ungodly agenda. Despite these huge sums, the corporation’s hierarchy incessantly claims to need more and more tax dollars.”
